Raising Money for DAApr
On the evening of Saturday, December 4 and all day on December 5, the development department at Dakota Adventist Academy had a phone-a-thon to raise money for the school’s Annual Fund. A few Alumni and church friends came to participate in the calling. Elma Reinke from Kulm, ND Church, John and Deb Merkel from Kulm, ND, and Berneice Lunday from Bismarck, ND volunteered hours to calling alumni and Dakota Conference constituents. It was an exciting time as they collected wonderful pledges from faithful, dedicated alumni and friends. Lenhardt and Darlene Kungel also from Kulm Church and Sharon Haas from Cleveland Church made many calls from their homes. Between the two groups they’ve raised $14,000, with more to come! Praise the Lord! Many thanks to our callers, givers and those who have pledged money that is being used as matching challenges! The matching challenge money has really helped encourage many to give a little, and for some to give even more then what they would have. When someone can only give $10 and the matching money turns it into $20, many are more inclined to give that $10. A little bit goes a long way when there are many giving. If you are interested in helping out with a phone-a-thon in the future, please contact Richelle Rickard or Ruby Wetzel at DAA (701)258-9000 Ext. 236.

Texas Heritage Tourtexas

On January 3, two vans and a car pulled out of Dakota Adventist Academy with History Teacher, Ron Huff, Math Teacher, Jim Rickard, and Development Director, Richelle Rickard behind the wheels. Eleven DAA students and the Rickard's eight year old daughter, Juliana, piled into the vehicles with two weeks worth of luggage, bedding, and school books. They hit the road with southern Texas as the destination. With great planning, Ron had put together a full and organized History tour of Texas. Many students were excited to go to Texas for the first time. The first night was spent at Union College. On the way to Southwestern University in Keene, TX the group stopped at the Oklahoma bombing site.

The students learned a lot about history by personally visiting places such
as the Alamo, Houston Space Center, the US Lexington, the Institute of Texas Cultures, President Kennedy's assasination site, and many other neat places. Along the trip the students and staff put on music and drama
programs for two schools and also did music at two church services.

The students were able to spend a day on the beach at South Padre Island at the Gulf of Mexico. The 78-80 degree weather was well appreciated! Ron also planned a community outreach project for the students in Weslaco, TX, where Valley Grande Academy is located. The students scraped and painted a house for an elderly woman. She didn't speak English, but her daughter was able to translate for her. She said God blesses and God blessed her by sending the group to her house. She was very grateful for the help. The students completed two pages of journaling for each day. The trip was an educational and bonding experience that the students and staff will remember forever. History hasbecome more meaningful in the lives of those who toured Texas Heritage.

Want to Be a Doctor?boyko

The Science department with teacher Craig Wiley had an interesting class period that could have made some a little queasy. Dakota Adventist Academy students learned a bit of what being a surgeon entitles by alumni and friend Dr. Kimber Boyko of Bismarck, ND on November 16. Dr. Boyko brought a fantastic medical presentation which included a video of one of his surgeries. It showed up close footage on the inside of a body in operation. Though some had to close their eyes through part of it, it was a wonderful learning experience for each of them. We will see if any of our students decide to become surgeons. Thank you Dr. Boyko!

Alumni Weekend at DAA

The October 6-8 Alumni Weekend at Dakota Adventist Academy was a busy, but fun time on campus. Over 400 Alumni came to reminisce about old times and share new experiences in their lives. On Friday the junior class at DAA was in charge of serving during the 4:00 Pioneer Luncheon in the cafeteria, where the honor class of 1957 shared many memories. Richelle Rickard and senior class President, Marianne Quaile made the senior class challenge to the alumni to match their class’s personal donation of $20 a student. This money will be used for a gift the senior class will leave behind for DAA. The alumni well over matched the challenge with $1050! The seniors are very grateful. Music teacher, Cyril Myers was the guest speaker for the honor class of 1987’s vespers program. On Sabbath, the DAA choir performed a few beautiful pieces of music. Throughout the day, different alumni from honor classes shared music, stories, mission trip experiences… The afternoon program was filled with music from many alumni and a beautiful song was sung by Bismarck church members, Linda Oswald, Dan Spilavoy and Jolene Engelhart in memory of our dear friend, Edna Patzer. (Who had played piano for many, many years at Camp Meeting).

The senior class served for the Saturday evening alumni banquet in the cafeteria. After vespers and the alumni business meeting, everyone headed down to the gym where the annual Alumni vs. DAA’s basketball game started. The Acrolights gymnastics team performed during half time with an impressive set of routines. The school spirit at the game rose even higher this year as many young ladies at DAA painted their faces and cheered the DAA Knights on. The Knights were at the lead for a while, but after a great fight to win, the alumni guys won this year. The friendships and fun times are never ending at Dakota Adventist Academy.

Human Song Begins Tour

"Let's go team!" Jim and Richelle Rickard loaded two vans of students on Friday, September 29, and headed to Bottineau, ND. The group was thrilled to stay the night at Northern Lights Camp that night. In the morning the thirteen of them headed to Bottineau SDA church. The senior girl's quartet, Marianne Quaile, Arielle Seibold, Jaylene Evanenko and Brittany Harwood sang a couple beautiful specials. The Human Song drama team which consists of Jared Woll, Marie St. Claire, Kelli Weinke, Fah Chulapamornsri, Kiersten Adels, Tong Wattananon, along with Jim & Richelle Rickard put on a drama/music sermon. Their program touches on many subjects such as, God renewing broken hearts, gossip, being a true friend, getting stuck in sin and more. Jim and Richelle and their daughter Juliana did songs and bible verses in between, that linked with the subjects of the skits. The Human Song group will be touring to different churches throughout the year. Check out the Conference website to find out when they will be at a church near you. They would love to meet you.

School Begins for DAA

Dakota Adventist Academy registration day was Sunday, August 20 from 9:00 a.m. till 4:30 pm. The day was exciting for many students reuniting after the summer break. It was great to see new friendships quickly blossom as old students welcomed new students.   Forty-one students are enrolled so far. There are a few students still working through details and hoping to be able to join the DAA family soon.
After supper, the student body and staff met in the gymnasium where the six SA Officers led the group out in some fun activities, followed by the annual, beginning of year ‘handshake’. The students than went outside for a watermelon feed and social time. The evening activities ended with a few games of dodge ball in the gym. After the fun event, the boys and girls parted ways and headed to their dorms for orientation.

The six SA officers and their sponsor, Ron Huff, with the help of Valerie Haveman, headed to Northern Lights camp at Lake Metigoshi on Monday afternoon to prepare for the school camp week. The rest of the students and staff headed up on Wednesday morning. Camp week is a time for students and staff to get to know each other an informal, yet structured setting.  Everyone will return to DAA on Sunday, August 27. The doors of Dakota Adventist Academy are open wide for many more students.

Dakota Adventist Academy starts the year in service for God!

On August 23-27, Dakota Adventist Academy went to Northern Lights camp at Lake Metigoshe. The students and staff enjoyed the bonding time that included water and field activities, class competitions, art, music, skits, service projects and great food. Friday evening, Pastor Darrell Lindensmith and DAA chaplain, Cyril Myers, planned a beautiful Agape Supper for vespers, with the tables arranged as a cross. The praise music that evening was never more beautiful! Pastor Larry Priest blessed the group with a devotional talk. The students and staff broke up into twos and did foot washing and than communion. On Sabbath the DAA choir of twenty-two students, went to the Bottineau nursing home and put on a great performance. The rest of the student body went from door to door handing out literature. There are many more ministry projects planned for the rest of the school year. God is working through our youth!

Dakota Adventist Academy Sand Sculptures...

On Sabbath, September 2, the entire student body and faculty went to Bismarck church where the choir put on the church service. The students did an excellent job, considering they had choir practices for only one week prior to performing. Later that day the students and many staff from DAA went to the Missouri River to spend the afternoon in the sand. The campus ministries team planned religious activities which included making sand sculptures using ideas from the Bible. The senior class used their creative minds to form a sculpture of Adam and Eve with their classmate Marie St. Clair buried in the Eve sculpture. They added a little drama to their sculpture by having Marie come to life after God gave her a rib from Adam. The junior class formed Jacob 's ladder in the sand. The sophomores did Noah's Ark and the freshman created Mt. Sinai with the tabernacle. The staff sculptured a Bible.

After a picnic supper, music teacher, Cyril Meyers planned a touching vespers at the river with music and testimonies students shared. The vespers ended with the group holding hands in a circle singing and praying together.

Sunny Awarded In Math Competition

After the Junior/Senior students came back with Nathan Way placing third in the state at the math competition, the freshman/sophomore students decided to do just as good. On April 12 Jim Rickard took 6 of his math students to Minot for the freshman/sophomore math competition. Sunny Lee from Korea was also awarded third in the state. Not only are DAA students doing great in hands on competitions like the Auto Body competition a few attended in Wahpeton, ND recently, but it is inspiring to know that they are excelling in the mind teasing part of education as well. We are very proud of Sunny for his achievements. Way to go Sunny, keep up the good work!

$300,000 raised for the Annual Fund!

The Annual Fund Campaign has come to a close for this school year. Many are wondering how much offering on Sabbath of Camp Meeting was collected for DAA. By the end of the Sabbath, we collected just over $23,000 between the offering during church and those who gave me their offering later in the day. This puts us just over $300,000 raised. I want to thank each person who donated to the great cause of Christian Education. Your dedication to our SDA Education in the Dakotas is obvious and truly a blessing to the staff and students at DAA.

I also want to thank those who supported the Silent Auction at Camp Meeting. Pastor Temple from Bowman Church in North Dakota live auctioned two big items, an antique organ and a set of 16 Russian Nesting Dolls. Those two items brought in $865! A total of $1525 was raised for Worthy Student Funds for the coming school year. Many thanks to all who donated beautiful hand-made quilts and other items of worth to the auction.

We are starting a new Annual Fund Campaign for the 2007-08 school year. You can help in assuring financial stability in DAA for our students. Our youth are so important. DAA can play a big part in the salvation of our young people. At DAA our youth can learn to serve the Lord and others. We are taking DAA students on a mission trip this year and opening the door for them to participate in many community outreach projects.

If you would like to send a donation for the Annual Fund, please write Annual Fund or Development in the memo on your check. The address to the school is 15905 Sheyenne Circle Bismarck, ND 58503. Thank you so much for your prayers and financial support for DAA. May God bless each of you abundantly.

Letter from a DAA Graduate

Kortnye  Hurst - Senior Class President at DAA

As a four-year senior, I am both reminiscent and excited as my education at DAA draws to an end. While striving for academic excellence, I have also been active in a number of extracurricular activities: hand bells, choir, Dakota Singers, Acrolights, girl’s basketball, the Student Board of Directors for Bismarck/Mandan Chamber of Commerce, the National Honor Society, sophomore, junior and Senior Class President.
(Photo inset: Kortnye on left, with friends.)

Having been raised in a home where both parents work within the Adventist system, I have only been attending church school. Previously being terrified of “public school kids,” I more recently wondered of what benefit that experience may have fostered. While I may never know, I have no regrets. DAA is not perfect and I am glad! Let me explain.

When asked what one thing DAA has offered by the recent visiting accreditation committee, I said “Some academies around North America Division are very conservative and others are liberal, but I feel that DAA possesses a mixture of all sides, allowing us to be whoever or whatever we want to be.”

We are offered an environment so that we can be good if we want to be- if that is who or what we wish to be.

I have been given opportunities not afforded and often not permitted in public or other Christian schools. Apart from performing, organizational skills and public speaking (worship thoughts/sermons), I feel like I am coming away from my four-year experience with a foundation for the future. I will be less susceptible to negative life influences because I was guided by God-fearing faculty and allowed to choose for myself, giving me a base for eternal success!
